Roads, railways and urban areas are frequently subjected to instability of rock slopes. Such instabilities can affect the superficial portion of the slope or involve its entire global stability. Rock fall protection systems are the key element in the design and maintenance of infrastructure networks and have a direct impact on safety.
The classical distinctions made between active and passive protection systems are these:-
"Passive" systems are those that hinder or control rock falls or avalanches to protect the infrastructure below the slope; such as roads, railways, buildings, etc.-. Passive systems include:-
- Drapery system
- Rock fall protection barriers
- Catch fences
- Rock fall protection embankments
"Active" systems are those that act to prevent rock detachments.
- where different kinds of steel wire and steel cables form an armored mesh which is then anchored to the rock slope to prevent movement or possible detachment of rocks.

| Double Twisted Mesh is used as a drapery system to prevent rock fall and debris from falling onto roads, railways or where there is a possibility of loss of property or life. Due to the characteristics of the double twist, the steel wire mesh can withstand the force of the falling rocks without unraveling in the event of wire breakage. The mesh is anchored at the top of the slope with a trench at the bottom to collect the debris. Encapsulating vegetative soil pockets under the drapery system permits the establishment of vegetation if conditions permit. The double twisted mesh is available galvanized or galvanized with PVC sheets. |

| Active Face Stabilization |

| When large, possibly unstable rocks cannot be safetly removed from the rock face, a system is required that actively secures or 'straps' that rock back into the rock face stopping it from detaching and falling. |

| Traditionally, when standard and rockfall netting is not able to offer sufficient strength for certain projects, the mesh is reinforced by installing steel cables across the rockface as a secondary operation during installation. |
